Roebourne Regional Prison
The project consisted of upgrades to the prisoner cells, ablutions, education and library facilities and security control stations. Extensions were also made to the prisoner reception area and health centre and a new secure vehicle compound constructed.
The fully operational prison presented access and mobility difficulties during construction. These were overcome through close liaison with prison security personnel.
Other challenges included the semi-remote location of the prison and co-ordinating work to be performed by prisoners. Locating existing services in the absence of accurate plans of the current facility was also a challenge.
Overall, the project is a good example of achieving a desired result through co-operation between architect, builder and the end user.

This project is in a number of parts including refurbishment of the reception building, ablutions, laundry, kitchen and dining hall plus a new covered walkway broken through existing brick walls for access to new cells and facilities.
Additionally, a new day dining facility was constructed offsite in four sections and lifted over fences and buildings with a series of cranes to a new location inside the “A” Block courtyard. Some services were installed in the facility offsite with the balance completed after it had been assembled insitu.
A guard custodial office was also cut into the existing “A” Block with glazing, cladding walls and cabinetwork added to complete the project.
